Founded in 788 by the monk Saicho, the headquarters of Tendai Buddhism. Located across
the vast expanse of Mount Hiei, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its most sacred symbol is the
"Inextinguishable Dharma Lamp," which has burned for over 1,200 years. Known as the
"Mother of Japanese Buddhism" because many founders of other Buddhist sects studied
here.

「不滅の法灯」は1200年以上消えていないThe Flame hasn't gone out for 1,200+ years
Inside the Konpon Chū-dō, three lamps burn before the Medicine Buddha. The fire started by founder
Saichō has never gone out for over 1,200 years. Even when Oda Nobunaga burned the mountain down, the
flame survived because it had been previously shared with a temple in Yamagata, allowing it to be
brought back.
「あの火、1200年間一度も消えたことがないんだって。信じられないよね。」
"That flame has been burning since the 8th century — it even survived wars and
disasters!"

比叡山は「日本仏教の母」Mount Hiei: "The Mother of Japanese Buddhism"
Surprisingly, many major Buddhist founders in Japan started here. Honen (Jodo), Shinran (Jodo-Shinshu),
Dogen (Zen), and Nichiren all studied on Mt. Hiei before founding their own sects. It was effectively
the most important religious "university" in Japanese history.
「教科書に載ってる有名なお坊さん、大体ここで修行してたんだよ。」
"Wait, so all those famous monks from history class actually graduated from this same
mountain?"
The ultimate spiritual challenge: walking Mt. Hiei's paths for 1,000 days over 7 years. Totaling
40,000km — the Earth's circumference — performed only in straw sandals. Monks carry a small sword to
end their lives if they fail. Those who complete it are revered as "living Buddhas."
Two geniuses who traveled to China together. Saicho founded Tendai and Kukai founded Shingon. While
they initially helped each other, they eventually parted ways over doctrinal differences. Their
separate paths became the pillars of Japanese Buddhism.

In 1571, Oda Nobunaga leveled the entire temple complex. However, subsequent leaders like Hideyoshi
and Ieyasu provided massive support for its reconstruction. The resilience shown here is a testament
to its central role in Japanese history.
Sitting on the border of Kyoto and Shiga, Mt. Hiei offers stunning panoramas of Lake Biwa, Japan's
largest lake. This view has inspired monks for centuries, offering a sense of cosmic scale far
removed from the busy world below.

最澄の言葉「一隅を照らす」の意味"Light Up Your Corner" (Ichigu o Terasu)
"To light up one corner is to be a national treasure." Saicho taught that if every person shines in
their own specialized role, the entire world becomes bright. This philosophy remains the spiritual
core of the temple today.
The Eternal Flame must be constantly refilled with oil. One theory suggests the Japanese word
"Yudan" (negligence, literally "cutting oil") comes from the fear of letting this fire go out. The
discipline required to keep it burning for 1,200 years is legendary.
Located to the northeast of Kyoto, Mt. Hiei sits at the "Demon Gate" (Kimon). In traditional
geomancy,
this was an unlucky direction, so a powerful temple was placed here to guard the capital. It serves
as Kyoto's ultimate spiritual shield.
Buddhist vegetarian cuisine (Shojin Ryori) is part of the training here. It avoids meat and fish,
focusing on gratitude and spiritual mindfulness. Hiei Yuba (tofu skin) is a local specialty. Each
bite is an exercise in history and gratitude.
